Acme Mercantile opened its doors in the fall of 2002 to fill an ever-widening gap left behind by the loss of many of our “useful” stores in downtown Ann Arbor.  We lost our hardware store, office supply store, department store and drugstore, all of which were independently owned longtime fixtures of the downtown.  What we have accomplished is the world’s smallest department store in 900 square feet.  Located in an historic brownstone building, Acme Mercantile supplies downtown residents, workers and destination shoppers with everything from toilet plungers to nylon stockings and dog food.
